Director & Educator

A Bit About Me

Hi, I am Matt Gehring, a New York–based director and educator specializing in comedy and performance. I have directed 100+ shows, with work seen from Joe’s Pub to the Edinburgh Fringe, collaborating with artists including Chrissy Shackelford, Chloe Troast, Alexis Gay, Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang. For five years, I led the comedy residency at the Obie Award–winning Ars Nova, developing 25 original shows. I have taught at NYU Tisch, UCB, NYFA, and Brooklyn College, where I guide artists to develop their voices and create new work. I created the long-running musical show Shiz at UCB, and my work has been featured on Comedy Central, Netflix, Just For Laughs: Montreal, and on stages worldwide. I hold an MFA from Brooklyn College, where I was a Shubert Scholar, and I currently serve as Comedy Division Director at Stella Adler.
