Educator & Off-Broadway Director

A Bit About Me

Hi, I am Matt Gehring, a New York–based director and educator specializing in comedy and performance. I have directed 100+ shows, with work seen from The Signature Theater to Joe’s Pub to the Edinburgh Fringe, collaborating with artists including Bowen Yang, Chrissy Shackelford, Chloe Troast, Alexis Gay, and Matt Rogers. For five years, I led the comedy residency at the Obie Award–winning Ars Nova, developing 25 original shows. I have taught at NYU Tisch, UCB, NYFA, and Brooklyn College, where I guide artists to develop their voices and create new work. I created the long-running musical show Shiz at UCB, and my work has been featured on Comedy Central, Netflix, Just For Laughs: Montreal, and on stages worldwide. I hold an MFA from Brooklyn College, where I was a Shubert Scholar, and I currently serve as Comedy Division Director at Stella Adler.
