Directing Bio

Matt Gehring is a director of live theater and comedy. Currently, Matt works at the Obie award-winning Ars Nova where he is the co-creator/leader of CAMP, the Comedy Artist Makers Program.

Since his undergrad, Matt has directed 100+ shows, ranging from solo performances to musical theater to sketch comedy at Amy Poehler’s Upright Citizen’s Brigade Theater. Directing highlights include Harry Clarke featuring Billy Crudup, written by David Cale (Berkeley Rep, assistant director to Leigh Silverman), Pop Roulette’s Amazing Earth featuring SNL’s Bowen Yang, and Last Week Tonight writer Chrissy Shackelford’s one-woman show Diane Shangri-La: Not Dry Yet. Over the last two years, Matt has directed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Ellie Macpherson’s Happy Birthday, Mr. President (2022, Underbelly) and Lane Kwederis: Sex Job (2023, Underbelly) and Salma Hindy & Danielle Deluty’s Parallel (2023, Just The Tonic). He’ll be returning to Edinburgh in 2024 with comedian Alexis Gay.

With Tony nominee Shaina Taub (Suffs), Matt created and directs SHIZ: Broadway Meets Sketch Comedy, which has featured special guests including Jeff Hiller, Jenn Colella, and Nikki M. James. He is also a proud 14-year member of the Story Pirates, where he offers a voice on their award-winning podcast.

Matt is currently pursuing his MFA in Theater Directing at Brooklyn College in the class of 2025.
